A 1955 Mercedes-Benz, the only car of its kind in the world, was auctioned earlier this month for 135 million euros ($143 million). This has made it the most expensive selling car in the world. RM Sotheby announced this on Thursday. “A 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut has been auctioned for a record price. It was bought by a private collector for 135,000,000 euros,” said a release from the company that auctioned off used vehicles.
This vehicle has been sold for almost three times the previous record of selling the most expensive vehicle. The last record was in 2018 when a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO was auctioned for $48 million.
The auction house said, this auction was done on an invitation only basis, on May 5 at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. RM Sotheby said that this vehicle is one of two models made of a Mercedes-Benz racing car. It was named after its creator and chief engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut.
The auction company further said, “The private buyer has agreed that the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe will be publicly displayed on special occasions, while the other Original 300 SLR Coupe will remain in the company’s ownership and will be kept in the museum.” .
RM Sotheby further said that the money that will be received from the auction of this auction will be used to create Mercedes Band Fund around the world and this fund will be used for environmental science and decarbonization research.
