Actress Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik, and others were named in draft charges by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Wednesday in a case involving drugs and the passing of Bollywood star Sushant Singh Rajput.
Atul Sarpande, a special public prosecutor, stated that all of the accused continue to face charges as set forth in the charge sheet submitted to the court. The prosecution has asked the court to indict Rhea and Showik for using drugs, as well as for getting drugs for the late actor Rajput and paying for them.
The court was going to file charges against each defendant, according to Sarpande. It was impossible to accomplish since several of the accused filed for discharge. He added the charges wouldn’t be framed until the discharge pleas were resolved, as the court had stated.
On Wednesday, the court heard testimony from all of the defendants, including Rhea and Showing. On July 12, the matter was posted for hearing by special judge V G Raghuwanshi, who hears matters involving the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
During the investigation, Chakraborty was detained in September 2020. Nearly a month after her arrest, she was granted bail by the Bombay High Court. In addition to Rhea, Showik Chakraborty, another relative of Rhea, and a number of other people are also charged with drug usage, possession, and funding in the case. Most of them are free on bond.
The central agency has been looking into claims of drug use in the Bollywood and television industries since actor Sushant Singh Rajput, 34, was discovered hanged in his flat in the Bandra suburban on June 14, 2020.
His death’s case is being looked into by the CBI.
