Thereafter, an FIR was registered against him by the investigating agency.
The minister was to appear before the CBI by 3 pm.
A case has been registered against Adhikari and his daughter, Minister of State for Education, under sections 420 (cheating) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code, besides sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, an official of the probe agency said.
“As per the order of the Calcutta High Court, the minister was supposed to appear before our officers by 3 pm, but he did not do so. We have registered an FIR against him and his daughter.”
The high court had on Thursday directed the officer to appear before the CBI by 3 pm, but his lawyer said he was in Cooch Behar and would fly to Kolkata in the evening. Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay then asked the Bidhannagar police to take him to the CBI office as soon as he landed at the Kolkata airport. The court also said that if the officers are not found in the flight, it will be treated as a hoax to evade the court and the CBI and in that case, the matter will be dealt with accordingly.
According to the CBI official, the officer had sent a letter to the agency seeking more time to appear before it. “They have written to us seeking more time to be present in connection with the ongoing investigation. We are ready to question him.”
The court had initially directed the minister to appear before the CBI on May 17. One of the petitions claimed that the officer’s daughter was appointed as a teacher despite getting less marks than the petitioner. Trinamool Congress leaders did not appear before the agency on Wednesday as well.
