Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, who is currently serving a jail term for raping his disciples, was granted a 21-day leave on Monday. For the first time since his conviction years ago, the self-styled godman has been granted furlough by the Haryana government and a jail official has confirmed the Dera chief’s release for the next three weeks. Haryana Jail Minister Ranjit Singh Chautala reportedly said that every prisoner has the right to get furlough as per the law and the same applies to the Dera chief.
The 3-week parole of the Dera chief is being touted as an important step ahead of the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections on February 20. The leader of the sect based in Sirsa has a big influence in many assembly seats in the state. Earlier in May last year, he was granted parole to visit his ailing mother. He was released from Rohtak’s Sunaria Jail and taken to Gurgaon to meet his mother under tight police protection.
Sirsa-based Dera chief has been found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati and raping two women. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was convicted of raping two female “disciples” on August 25, 2017. was convicted on the charge. He was convicted in both cases and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment (20 years in total) in each case. Subsequently, he was found guilty of the murder of journalist Chhatrapati on January 11, 2019. After which he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
