Kolkata: The controversy is not stopping after Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra’s statement on Kali Devi. Even after registering several FIRs across the country, Mahua is not ready to back down from his statement. Mahua said, ‘I will continue to defend my statement till my death. I don’t want to live in an India where only the patriarchal brahminical outlook of the BJP will dominate and the rest will revolve around religion.
In fact, TMC MP Mahua Moitra had said on Tuesday on the controversy surrounding the poster of Kali that there are many forms of Kali. To me Kali means the goddess who accepts meat and wine. However, TMC distanced itself from this statement and condemned it.
After Mahua’s statement, BJP lodged a complaint to immediately arrest the TMC MP. This complaint was made in Krishnanagar, the parliamentary constituency of Kolkata and Mahua Moitra. At the same time, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, an FIR has been registered against Mahua Moitra for hurting religious sentiments.
How did the ‘Kali’ controversy begin?
The issue started after a film maker named Leena Manimekalai shared a poster. Leena shared the poster of her documentary film ‘Kali’ on social media. In this poster, Maa Kali was shown smoking a cigarette. Along with this, he also had a colorful flag of the LGBT community in one hand. As soon as the poster came in front of it, a debate broke out across the country.
BJP had targeted
After Mahua’s statement, the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, Shubhendu Adhikari had targeted him. He had said that after Bengali Maa Durga, we worship Maa Kali in the form of Shakti. There is no Bengali who does not keep fast in Kali Puja. I don’t want to comment on what his party did, but if the Bengal Police has even an iota of respect for the Ashoka Pillar, then the way they started action against Nupur Sharma. FIRs were registered against him across the country. I want Bengal Police to take action. Police does not take action in 10 days. So I will move the court on the 11th day.
TMC’s edge from the statement
Mahua Moitra gave a statement on Kali while attending the India Today Conclave East 2022. After Mahua Moitra’s statement, BJP accused TMC of insulting mother Kali. The party had also lodged a complaint seeking immediate arrest of Mahua Moitra. On the one hand, Mahua stands by his statement, while on the other hand his party TMC distanced himself from his statement. TMC MP Saugata Roy said on Mahua’s statement that Trinamool Congress does not support his statement. TMC does not agree with this statement. Mahua’s statement is different from the ideology of the party. Our party respects all religions equally and what Mahua has said is different from the ideology of the party.
Shashi Tharoor had defended
On the one hand, where his party got away with Mahua’s statement, on the other hand Congress leader Shashi Tharoor supported the TMC MP. Shashi Tharoor tweeted and said that Mahua Moitra said what every Hindu knows. Shashi Tharoor wrote that the attacks on Mahua have taken me by surprise. These attacks are happening to say something which every Hindu knows. Hindus know that our method of worship is not the same in different parts of the country. What one offers to the goddess, it tells more about the devotee than the goddess.
