Widespread protests are going on against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his family over the economic crisis in the country. Nine people have lost their lives while hundreds were injured in clashes between government supporters and protesters. After which Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa was forced to resign and Wickremesinghe was appointed as the new Prime Minister.

Protesters say they will continue their campaign as long as Gotabaya Rajapaksa remains president. He also called Wickremesinghe a puppet and criticized his appointment of four cabinet ministers.
